If at all interested in space travel while on your vacation to Florida, be sure and stop and visit the Kennedy Space Center. Simply detour off I-95 if on your way farther south. On July 29, 1958, Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation that created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Four years later the Launch Operations Center was renamed to honor John F. Kennedy.

It is from this site that all space flights take skyward, manned or unmanned. This is the place to visit to learn about what has been done concerning space flights as well learning about successful launches of telecommunication missiles. Although other places around the country are involved in space programs such as the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas and the Goddard Space flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the Florida site is for launching.

The Kennedy space center is slightly less than an hour's drive from Orlando where all kinds of space adventures, learning, teacher training and other events are ongoing throughout the year. Refresh you memory if you are older and want to learn more about the first moon walk by Neil Armstrong; the first man to orbit the earth, John Glenn and about other astronauts.

Nearby is Meritt Island National Wildlife Refuge where visitors can go and gaze in wonder at exotic tropical birds and plants. While there they can observe manatee behavior, fish and hunt, boating and paddling adventures. This preserved animal and plant refuge center is only four miles away from Titusville, Florida where one can find suitable hotel accommodations and restaurants. The area was established in 1963 to be a added attraction to the space center.
